As you will be able to see in a previous post, last Sunday October 9th was the Feast of Blessed John Henry Newman. There was a Solemn High Mass to celebrate this feast and afterwards in the hall there was a small celebration.
As well as the usual tea, coffee and biscuits there was also a glass of red or white wine and a piece of cake on offer too! Below are some pictures of the cake:
Blessed John Henry Newman – Pray for us!
This morning at St Mary’s a group of about forty children from St Mary’s Primary School joined the parishioners for Holy Mass.
This group of children are known as the ‘Mini Vinnies’ which in other words means ‘School SVP’. Many Parishes are blessed to have a SVP (Saint Vincent de Paul Society) and we thank Almighty God for their tireless service througout the year. The President of our Parish SVP spoke briefly to the congregation and also asked the ‘Mini Vinnies’ a few questions about the work they had done and the tasks ahead.
One question was – What do you enjoy about being a Mini Vinnie? The answer was ‘making other people happy’.
Some of the ‘Mini Vinnies’ took part in reading the Prayer of the Faithful.
The Parish SVP joined the ‘Mini Vinnies’ for a group photo!
Today is the feast day of Blessed John Henry Newman who is Patron of our Parish. The proper prayers from the Common of Pastors were prayed in the Mass, although because it is a Sunday – the readings of the 28th Sunday of Ordinary Time were used.
The sun was shining outside which made the clouds of incense very visible!
Two hymns written by Blessed John Henry Newman were sung at Mass:
Lead kindly light
Praise to the Holiest in the height
As well as the popular Antiphon – Jubilate Deo (Rejoice, exult in the Lord) and the ICEL Chant Mass Setting was used which is the official Mass Setting for the Diocese of Lancaster.
