Birthday celebrations!

Last Saturday our Parish Priest Canon Cooper celebrated his 70th birthday!

After the 10:30am Mass at St Mary’s on Sunday there was a small celebration…

All parishioners were invited into the hall for cake and wine.

Stations of the Cross

The very popular Lenten Devotion ‘Stations of the Cross’ take place every Friday evening at 7:00pm in the Parish during Lent.

Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers.

All are welcome to attend Stations of the Cross!

The remaining dates and locations are:
St Mary’s – 24th March.
St Patrick’s – 31st March
The Good Shepherd – 7th April

The Solemnity of St Joseph

Today is the Solemnity of St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Holy Mass was celebrated in St Mary’s Church this morning. Two classes of children from St Mary’s RC Primary School joined parishioners for Mass.

The Collect from today’s Mass:

Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that by Saint Joseph’s intercession
your Church may constantly watch over
the unfolding of the mysteries of human salvation,
whose beginnings you entrusted to his faithful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.

CAFOD Soup Day

There was a good turn out today for the CAFOD Soup Day in St Patrick’s Church Hall. The Soup Day was held in aid of the Lenten CAFOD Family Fast Day.

There were some tasty treats on offer too!
Thank you to all the helpers and to those who organised this event.

The Feast of St Patrick

Earlier this morning Holy Mass was celebrated at St Patrick’s for the Feast of St Patrick, Bishop, Missionary and Patron of Ireland.

A small flower arrangement was put together for the statue of St Patrick in the Church doorway, so as soon as people walked into Church; they could see this beautiful display!

Sacramental Preparation begins!

This year’s group of children who will be making their First Confession and First Holy Communion later in the year began their preparation classes today.

During the 10:30am Mass at St Mary’s the Sacramental Preparation Group were presented to the Parish. Please remember them in your prayers!

Women’s World Day of Prayer

Last Friday was ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’. A service was held in St Mary’s Church and this year’s theme is ‘Am I being unfair to you?’.

Canon Cooper welcomed everyone to St Mary’s Church and said a prayer before the service began. Ladies representing different Churches in the area took part by reading, dancing and singing.

Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten Season. Around 85 people attended the 10:00am Mass at St Patrick’s this morning!

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year’s Palm Sunday, and placing them on the heads of ‘the faithful’ to the accompaniment of the words “Repent, and believe in the Gospel” or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”.

Prayer over the Offerings – Ash Wednesday:

As we solemnly offer
the annual sacrifice for the beginning of Lent,
we entreat you, O Lord,
that, through works of penance and charity,
we may turn away from harmful pleasures
and, cleansed from our sins, may become worthy
to celebrate devoutly the Passion of your Son.
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

At St Mary’s the Mass was at 12:10pm and again was very well attended! There is still another Mass in the Parish for Ash Wednesday this evening at The Good Shepherd 7:00pm.
